Protect Indoor Air Quality with an Air Filtration System
By Pierre Mouchette | Real Property Experts LLC
With energy prices rising and the cost of heating and cooling increasing, sealing or making homes airtight has emerged as a save-all to contain costs.  However, congruently with airtight homes arises held air quality.  This is where proper ventilation and air filtration systems come in.

Targeting Air Quality Needs
Air filtration systems can be installed to meet the needs of any home.  Specifically, the system must combat mold spores, pollens, and pet dander because these are fundamental air quality problems no matter where you live.
If you suffer from many different allergens, you might hire a certified RESNET air filtration consultant to assess your home and your family’s needs.  The consultant can test your home and recommend the most appropriate system.  Some of the options include:

  • Ionizers - an ionizing filter emits a small electric charge to the air stream creating a magnetic attraction for particles that cause them to stick to the filter.
  • Electrostatic precipitators create opposite charges on metal wires or plates that attract and hold dust, pollen, smoke, and other particles as small as .0001 microns on a reusable filter.
  • Ultraviolet light purification - air passes through an ultraviolet system that destroys bacteria, viruses, and dust mites of any size.
  • High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) - these filters are highly effective at capturing any airborne pollutants .3 microns or larger, including tobacco smoke, dust, and pollens.  HEPA filters remove 99.97% of the particulates that pass through the filters, but they do not remove bacteria or mold spores.
  • Ultra HEPA - a more efficient version of the HEPA, claimed that these filters would remove 99.9% of airborne pollutants.
