PFAS Chemicals
By Pierre Mouchette | Bits-n-Pieces
Scientific studies show that certain PFAS may affect different systems in the human body. NCEH/ATSDR is working with various partners to understand how exposure to PFAS affects human health, especially how exposure to PFAS in water and food may be harmful.  Although more research is needed, current research suggests that high levels of particular PFAS may lead to the following:
  • Changes in liver enzymes
  • Decreased vaccine response in children
  • Increased cholesterol levels
  • Increased risk of high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia in pregnant women
  • Increased risk of kidney or testicular cancer
  • Small decreases in infant birth weights
Note:  PFAS stands for per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances and are manufactured chemicals used in products that resist heat, oil, stains, and water.
