High Blood Pressure
By Pierre Mouchette | Bits-n-Pieces
Did you know that your arteries carry blood from the heart to your other body parts?  And blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries.
Blood pressure usually rises and falls throughout the day.  But if your pressure stays high for an extended period, it can damage your heart and cause many health problems.  Hypertension also called high blood pressure, is blood pressure that is higher than usual.

Facts About Hypertension in the United States
In 2017, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association published new guidelines for hypertension management and defined high hypertension as blood pressure at or above 130/80 mm Hg.  Stage 2 hypertension is blood pressure at or above 140/90 mm Hg.

Some FAQs to Be Aware of on Hypertension
  • Hypertension puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States.
  • Only about 1 in 4 adults (24%) with hypertension have their condition under control.
  • About half of adults (45%) with uncontrolled hypertension have a blood pressure of 140/90 mm Hg or higher.
