Caffeine and Heart Palpitations
By Pierre Mouchette | Real Property Experts LLC
Heart palpitations are sensations of rapid or racing heartbeats. Although this feeling is unsettling, it usually is not a cause for alarm because your heart is still pumping blood, just experiencing a momentary irregularity in its beats. The National Institutes of Health declares that most heart palpitations result from outside triggers, and caffeine is common.
Caffeine can cause heart palpitations in part because it stimulates your central nervous system. Though your heart has a spontaneous rhythm, nervous impulses can alter that rhythm, and you can be more sensitive to caffeine, which heightens your body's reaction and triggers momentary heart palpitations. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition states that most people can tolerate moderate caffeine without uncomfortable side effects. About 200 to 300 milligrams of caffeine, or the equivalent of two to four cups of regular coffee, is considered reasonable. Drinking more than this amount can stimulate a reaction, including heart palpitations. Although heart palpitations are rarely severe, they can signify an underlying condition, such as arrhythmia or heart failure. Consult your doctor if heart palpitations are complemented by dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain or fainting, or other concerns.
