Are Hormones in Meat Affecting Us?

By Pierre Mouchette | Real Property Experts LLC

Did You Know (DYK)?
  • That eighty percent of U.S. cows are injected with hormones and antibiotics?
  • FDA-approved hormones are used to fatten up livestock without having to feed them additional food.  These hormones include growth hormones, estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone.  Trenbolone, zeranol and melengestrol acetate are chemical hormones that are man-made for cattle.

The Facts?
  • You should limit red meat (beef, lamb, pork, and processed meats) to one 4 ounce serving or less a week.  Regularly eating saturated fat and the protein found in more than 4 ounces of red meat increases the risk for some cancers, heart disease and dementia.
  • The FDA regulates the number of hormones that are safe to remain in the meat or Maximum Residue Level (MRL).
  • Unless store-purchased meat is marked with USDA Organic Certified, it most likely contains hormones.

The bottom line…… if hormones are a concern to you, buy organic.  USDA Certified Organic meat cannot contain any artificial hormones, antibiotics, or artificial chemicals.
